‘Vaginal Davis enjoys sitting in the streets and parks of Berlin, her adopted home, with a notebook.
“People don’t expect that from a performer,” she said. “They expect that they’re constantly thinking, ‘me, me, me’ — which a lot of us are. But I do spend a lot of time doing what I call ‘lesbian processing.’ I’ll go to a bench in a park where there are cutie pies to look at, and watch everything, and take down little notes,” she said. “All these things get combined and used as fodder in something.”
For almost five decades, Davis — who describes herself as “a Blacktress” and a drag terrorist — has been mixing people and culture to create music, performances, visual art and club nights that gleefully toy with propriety and power. After emerging in Los Angeles’s post-punk haze, she moved to Berlin nearly 20 years ago, where she has worked with galleries, museums, theaters and academic institutions.’
